Titulaire d'un CFC d'ébéniste et ancien étudiant\n  de la \u003Cstrong>HEAD – Genève\u003C\u002Fstrong>, il revendique son bagage d'artisan et met sa connaissance intime\n  des matériaux, en particulier le \u003Cstrong>bois\u003C\u002Fstrong>, le \u003Cstrong>tissu\u003C\u002Fstrong> et le\n  \u003Cstrong>cuir\u003C\u002Fstrong>, au service de sa recherche artistique. Puisant dans un large éventail de\n  références, tirées de l'histoire passée comme présente, il se plaît à brouiller les catégories :\n  artisan et artiste, culture élitaire et populaire, objet brut et objet usiné. Par des\n  \u003Cstrong>gestes sculpturaux radicaux\u003C\u002Fstrong>, parfois teintés d'un romantisme assumé, il fabrique et\n  déconstruit une œuvre plastique qui se déploie sur plusieurs plans.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Transformer la matière\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  Ses expérimentations privilégient la \u003Cstrong>transformation de la matière\u003C\u002Fstrong> et des images par\n  l'assemblage, chaque pièce devenant le point de départ d'hypothèses formelles et conceptuelles.\n  Contreplaqué arraché, sciure collée, peinture et découpe sur bois ou sur pages de magazines : Harold\n  Bouvard exploite le bois, sa fibre et ses produits dérivés pour mieux les détourner de leurs usages\n  courants. Peinture obtenue par ponçage ou décapage, maquettes faites de chutes, compositions de\n  placages et de panneaux composites pressés à l'aveugle sous vide, moulages de surfaces de poussière\n  de bois : ces procédés forment la grammaire d'un \u003Cstrong>langage tridimensionnel\u003C\u002Fstrong> singulier.\n  Au-delà de l'influence de l'artisanat et du fait main, son œuvre fait se rejoindre la pensée et la\n  forme, la poésie et la fonction, dans une grande variété de formats, d'échelles et de traitements du\n  bois.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>De l'accident d'atelier à la réflexion\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  Ses œuvres tissent des relations singulières entre les matériaux, leur histoire, l'ébénisterie et les\n  outils qui les font naître. Tout part souvent des \u003Cstrong>accidents\u003C\u002Fstrong> et des observations de la\n  pratique d'atelier, qui deviennent ensuite le moteur d'une réflexion sur notre environnement et sur\n  les traces que laissent nos interventions, qu'elles soient volontaires ou non.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Des forces opposées dans la masse du bois\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  Les sculptures d'Harold Bouvard contiennent des forces contraires qui s'entremêlent et s'équilibrent :\n  verticalité et horizontalité, symétrie et asymétrie, matériaux laissés bruts ou au contraire très\n  travaillés. Les contraintes imposées par le matériau nourrissent paradoxalement la liberté\n  d'expression, et la densité de la masse est compensée par la fragilité des formes et un\n  \u003Cstrong>équilibre précaire\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Ces créatures hybrides, à la fois végétales et façonnées par la\n  main humaine, évoquent des hélices, comme les fruits du tilleul, ou des ailes d'oiseaux. Elles semblent\n  continuer à croître dans l'espace, comme si la poussée initiale du bois ne s'était jamais arrêtée.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>La série Indigène\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  La série \u003Cem>Indigène\u003C\u002Fem>, qui oscille entre force et fragilité, compte deux sculptures taillées\n  l'une dans le noyer, l'autre dans le tilleul. L'artiste a choisi ce dernier pour deux qualités : c'est\n  une essence indigène, et sa fibre très homogène se prête facilement au travail. \u003Cem>Indigène n°2\u003C\u002Fem>\n  (2019) a été acquise en 2020 par le \u003Cstrong>Fonds d'art contemporain de la Ville de Genève\n  (FMAC)\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>De la sculpture à la gravure\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  Invité à une exposition collective à Genève entre novembre 2018 et février 2019, Harold Bouvard y\n  développe une dérive de sa pratique de sculpteur : la \u003Cstrong>gravure\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Pour la série\n  \u003Cem>Black sap\u003C\u002Fem>, il creuse dans un tronc de cèdre des formes abstraites composées à partir de papiers\n  découpés, puis imprime la matrice au rouleau, par le poids du corps, sur du papier plotter qui révèle le\n  veinage, les nœuds et les imperfections du bois travaillé à la main. Comme dans la technique de la\n  plaque perdue, la surface est ensuite rabotée et n'en garde que les creux les plus profonds, des\n  strates qui apparaissent puis s'effacent telle une image fantôme. A trained cabinetmaker and former student of\n  \u003Cstrong>HEAD – Genève\u003C\u002Fstrong>, he embraces his craftsman background and puts his intimate knowledge of\n  materials, particularly \u003Cstrong>wood\u003C\u002Fstrong>, \u003Cstrong>fabric\u003C\u002Fstrong> and \u003Cstrong>leather\u003C\u002Fstrong>, to\n  work in his artistic research. Drawing on a wide range of references from past and present history, he\n  enjoys blurring categories: craftsman and artist, elite and popular culture, raw and manufactured\n  object. Torn plywood, glued\n  sawdust, painting and cutting on wood or magazine pages: Harold Bouvard works with wood, its fibre and\n  its by-products in order to divert them from their usual purposes. Painting achieved by sanding or\n  stripping, models made from offcuts, compositions of veneers and composite panels pressed blind under\n  vacuum, casts of wood-dust surfaces: these processes form the grammar of a singular\n  \u003Cstrong>three-dimensional language\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Beyond the influence of craftsmanship and handmade work,\n  his practice brings together thought and form, poetry and function, across a wide variety of formats,\n  scales and treatments of wood.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>From Studio Accident to Reflection\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  His works weave singular relationships between materials, their history, cabinetmaking and the tools\n  that bring them into being. It often starts with the \u003Cstrong>accidents\u003C\u002Fstrong> and observations of\n  studio practice, which then become the driving force of a reflection on our environment and on the\n  traces left by our interventions, whether deliberate or not.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Opposing Forces Within the Mass of Wood\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  Harold Bouvard's sculptures hold opposing forces that intertwine and balance each other: verticality and\n  horizontality, symmetry and asymmetry, materials left raw or, on the contrary, highly worked. The\n  constraints imposed by the material paradoxically feed his freedom of expression, and the density of\n  the mass is offset by the fragility of the forms and a \u003Cstrong>precarious balance\u003C\u002Fstrong>. These hybrid\n  creatures, both plant-like and shaped by the human hand, evoke propellers, like the fruit of the linden\n  tree, or birds' wings. They seem to keep growing in space, as if the wood's initial thrust had never\n  stopped.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>The Indigène Series\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  The \u003Cem>Indigène\u003C\u002Fem> series, which oscillates between strength and fragility, comprises two sculptures,\n  one carved in walnut and the other in linden. The artist chose linden for two qualities: it is a native\n  species, and its very homogeneous grain makes it easy to work. \u003Cem>Indigène n°2\u003C\u002Fem> (2019) was acquired\n  in 2020 by the \u003Cstrong>Contemporary Art Fund of the City of Geneva (FMAC)\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>From Sculpture to Printmaking\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  Invited to a group exhibition in Geneva between November 2018 and February 2019, Harold Bouvard developed\n  an offshoot of his sculptural practice: \u003Cstrong>printmaking\u003C\u002Fstrong>. For the \u003Cem>Black sap\u003C\u002Fem> series,\n  he carved abstract forms, composed from cut-out paper, into a cedar trunk, then printed the matrix with a\n  roller, using his body weight, on plotter paper that reveals the grain, knots and imperfections of the\n  hand-worked wood. As in the reduction printing technique, the surface is then planed down, keeping only\n  the deepest hollows: strata that appear and then fade away like a ghost image. Continuing this work with\n  cut paper, the \u003Cem>Colombo stile\u003C\u002Fem> collage series starts from the pages of an interior design book\n  found at a flea market: the cut-outs reveal hybrid forms in negative, which enter into dialogue with his\n  sculptures.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Career\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\n  Harold Bouvard has notably taken part in several group exhibitions at the\n  \u003Cstrong>CAN – Centre d'art Neuchâtel\u003C\u002Fstrong> between 2013 and 2015.
